Isn’t CBD related to marijuana?

You may be used to hearing the connection between cannabidiol and marijuana. However they are less related than many think.

The compound that makes marijuana get its reputation as a weed that makes you “high” is not CBD, but THC. THC is the short name given to tetrahydrocannabinol. It is also a derivative of the cannabis plant, but its effects in the human body are much different, and vary from person to person.

CBD, on the other hand, is well-known for its non-intoxicating nature.

Benefits of CBD

CBD has been prescribed for a number of conditions including seizures, arthritis, chronic pain, insomnia, and as an ailment for chemotherapy patients.

How do you take CBD?

CBD can be consumed in 5 different ways. They are:

1. CBD oil, taken under the tongue, or sublingually

This product is available in dropper doses. The ideal dose is 0.5 milligrams, twice a day, sublingually. The process of taking it is by taking the drops under your tongue, wait 60 seconds, and then swallow the oil.

Pro: This is ideal for people who cannot or would not smoke or consume the oil in edible form.
Con: Companies can claim anything to be a CBD oil. The best way to assure that you are getting a quality CBD product is by making sure it is FDA approved and verified by a third party. This information should be on the packaging of the product.

2. CBD vape cartridge

These cartridges are essentially mini tanks for e-cigarettes that are filled with CBD oil in e-juice form. Another type of cartridge is known as the “pods.” They do the same job as cartridges, except they are made for specific devices made for pods.

Pro: Great alternative for nicotine smoking that also has health benefits.
Con: Vape cartridges, and vaping in general, can be quite high in price.

3. Topical CBD

This type of CBD product is available in cream form, as a skin-safe oil, in lotion form, and even in patch form. They are all hypoallergenic. CBD can also come in soap forms, bath bombs, and salts. Basically, you use them during your bath time in lieu of, or in addition to, regular soap.

Topical CBD works strictly on the surface of skin. This means that it works on contact, rather that entering your bloodstream to soothe nerves endings like most medicines do.

Pro: Easy to use and inexpensive.
Con: As with all skin surface products, allergic reactions may still occur. The product also needs to be consistently reapplied after sweating, bathing, or rubbing against surfaces.

4. Smoking the whole flower

The CBD flower is essentially the bud of a cannabis plant. It is cultivated specifically to work as an ailment that does not intoxicate users. The essence of the CBD compound is consumed through inhalation, from the lungs and into the bloodstream.

Pro: Smoking the flower has been known to work quickly and effectively in people with chronic pain and anxiety conditions. You get the whole plant benefit, which includes all cannabinoids and terpenes, working together as one.
Con: Users need to be aware that the CBD flower may contain some levels of THC, albeit low.

5. Edibles

CBD edibles consist of foods that can be infused with CBD oil. This said, if the food can hold the oil, then any food capable of doing so can be considered CBD edibles. Gummies are one of the most popular ways to consume CBD in edible form. These gummies are made to relieve pain, anxiety, or to reverse insomnia. Often, CBD edibles are infused with more than just CBD oil. For example, melatonin and CBD oil combine to defeat sleeplessness.

Pro: Easy to consume.
Con: Companies selling edibles may raise prices on product.
